500+ Youth Empowered to see Hope within Failures

On 28 August 2025, over 500 Business Management and Entrepreneurship students from the College of Cape Town’s Crawford Campus gathered for a transformative day at the IEDF Ignite Your Future Entrepreneurship Training Program. The event, supported by ACE Learning, showcased the power of youth empowerment, innovation, and the Science of Hope in shaping the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. “Hope is the belief that you can reach your goals and dreams, no matter the obstacles,” Levi Daniels, Founder of ACE Learning, explained. “It’s about having a clear direction, believing in your capabilities, and creating multiple pathways to success. When you welcome failures as opportunities to exercise hope, and then apply this framework of hope to them, you become unstoppable.” Hope Theory[1] comprises three crucial components: In a landscape where over 90% of businesses fail within ten years, this message was a crucial reminder to these young leaders that there will inevitably be failure on the Journey to success. “The small percent of businesses which succeed aren’t magical in any way. They’re founded by individuals who have failed, learned from their failures, and tried again many, many times until they succeeded.” This address was preceded by an inspiring address by the President of the Informal Economy Development Forum (IEDF), Mr. David Venter, who highlighted how essential side hustles are for a flourishing economy and for local community’s prosperity. Mr. Venter highlighted how technology has made it easier for more people to start a business with what they have and wherever they are, and encouraged the young leaders to be the creators of the future we all desire. Clinton Fredericks from the College of Cape Town praised the initiative, noting that the Ignite Your Future program is a “game-changer” that bridges theoretical learning with practical entrepreneurial skills. Ms. Yolanda Van Dyk, the Global Director for Human Capital at the IEDF, praised the event as a powerful reminder that our youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but that they are already leaders today. The event underscored ACE Learning’s commitment to empowering youth, and to transforming education from mere “textbook knowledge” to a lived journey of personal and professional development. This event gave students first-hand insights into how small businesses started, grew, and thrived from the humblest of beginnings, helping them gain a sense of personal possibility and practical tools to actualize their business dreams. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Informal Economy Development Forum and the College of Cape Town for their visionary approach to youth empowerment. Together, we are not just teaching entrepreneurship: we are inspiring a generation of problem-solvers and change-makers. Academic Coaching: the Best Resource for Student Success and Wellness

Academic Coaching: the Best Resource for Student Success and Wellness

Discover how you can benefit from making an appointment with an academic coach (AC) to maximize your academic success. They’ll help you to develop effective strategies for turning your trials into triumphs and will help you become well-acquainted with your optimal self.  Outline Understanding the Role of an Academic Coach Why Should You Work with one? Frequently Asked Questions About AC Why work with an AC despite a demanding schedule? How can an AC help students succeed? What strategies do AC employ to enhance academic performance? How does an AC help with time management and goal setting? Where can you find AC resources and support? What are the benefits of online AC? How does accountability play a role in AC Can an AC assist with specific subjects or coursework? What are some tips for making the most of your AC sessions? How can an AC guide students to overcome academic anxiety? 1. Understanding the Role of an Academic Coach An AC is a professional who works closely with students to provide guidance, support, and personalized strategies to help them determine their own metrics and goals toward academic success, and then develop strategies to achieve those goals. ACs work one-on-one with students, providing a range of services such as goal setting, academic planning, time management, organization, study skills development, self development, mindfulness training, and transitioning to a more positive perspective. They guide students in navigating their learning journey, identify and overcome obstacles, and develop effective learning strategies. 2. Why Should You Work with an Academic Coach instead of a tutor? Whereas a tutor provides subject-specific support (like course specific content or topics  learned in the classroom), an AC helps you to become a more holistically grounded person. One-on-one Guidance: AC vary their approach to meet the unique needs of each student. They specialize in giving you the tools to help you improve your time management, perspective, and virtually any area of life that may be preventing you from meeting academic demands.  Enhance Executive Functioning: “Executive functioning” is another buzzword tossed out to undergraduates and faculty alike, and with good reason! It refers to our ability to regulate our emotions, employ self-control, initiate tasks and stick to them, and observe our thoughts (practice metacognition). An AC will provide the accountability and expertise necessary for you to improve your executive functioning skills.  Goal Setting and Accountability: AC assist students in setting realistic outcomes and hold them accountable for their progress, ensuring steady growth and improvement. Enhancing Study Skills: Academic coaches provide valuable insights and techniques to improve study habits, note-taking, test preparation, and other essential skills for academic success. Online Accessibility: With the option of virtual coaching, students can conveniently access academic coaching materials from anywhere, saving time and eliminating geographical limitations. Prioritize and improve your academic strategies: A student who struggles with perfectionism would need different advise than one who has difficulty getting started with studying. An AC can most efficiently assess your needs, help you adjust your priorities, and will get you back on track to earning the best grades possible. 3. Frequently Asked Questions About Academic Coaching If you’re still wavering about whether getting an AC is the solution you need to get back on track,  A) Why should I learn new tools from an academic coach when the demands of undergraduate (or graduate) school are so overwhelming? Learning new tools and techniques from an academic coach can actually help you navigate the demands of undergraduate or graduate school more effectively. By learning these new skills, you will become better equipped to manage your workload, prioritize your tasks, and improve your study habits. Additionally, an academic coach can provide valuable guidance and feedback on your academic performance, helping you stay on track and achieve your goals. Ultimately, investing time in learning new academic skills and strategies can help you succeed in school and set you up for success in your future career. B) How can an AC help you succeed as a student? Meeting with an academic coach will help you to be more organized, resilient, and self-aware. You are only able to connect with others to the extent that you can connect with yourself. One of the best (albeit most challenging) “homework” tasks you’ll ever get is that of self-discovery. An academic coach works with students over a long, consistent time period to keep them encouraged, accountable and (most importantly) appreciative of the journey toward achievement on gratitude and image on “Life is journey, not destination” C) What strategies do academic coaches employ to enhance academic performance? An AC will meet with you at a set frequency (once a week, for example) to discover your needs, your motives, and to act as a mirror whom can reflect important information about how you operate back at you. During sessions, an AC may review your current ways of doing schoolwork, then use tools such as mental imagery, mindfulness exercises, specific meditations, journaling, and setting up check-in schedules to help you envision and embody a more effective version of you (one that your future self will be thankful for!) D) How does an academic coach help with time management and goal setting? E) Where can you find academic coaching resources and support? The best place to start looking is at your school or local library. Check whether you are eligible for any free or tuition-inclusive services there. Make sure that they’re available at the times during the semester that you most need them.  F) What are the benefits of online academic coaching? Can Zoom calls really strengthen my skills, motivate me or be as productive as in-person meetings? G) How does accountability play a role in academic coaching? Research shows that sharing your goals, especially with someone who is equipped to help you, greatly boosts your chances of attaining them. Besides this fact, it’s challenging to attain academic excellence, and it’s always helpful to have someone to help you along the way to reaching your best. H) Can an academic coach assist with specific subjects or

Understanding Teen Life Coaching Teen life coaching (TLC) is a specialized form of coaching that focuses on helping adolescents and young adults develop the skills and mindset they need to lead successful and fulfilling lives. It involves working closely with teens to identify their goals, challenges, and aspirations. The objective is to provide guidance, support, and tools to help them make positive choices and build resilience. Teen life coaches (TLCs) often specialize in coaching for specific age groups, such as adolescents and young adults, recognizing that the needs and concerns of these individuals can vary significantly from those of younger children and older adults. The coaching process is rooted in the belief that every teen has the potential to create the life they want, regardless of the obstacles they face. A certified youth life coach employs evidence-based coaching techniques to ensure that teens get the help they. Since coaching does not have a central regulatory body, the International Coach Federation (ICF) is just one of many excellent life coaching programs that a mentor may be affiliated with to become a certified youth life coach. Just like highly qualified and smart teachers aren’t necessarily the best teachers, its important to know what to look for in a coach apart from their certifications.  2. Benefits of TLC Other than providing strategies to help young people navigate life effectively, TLC also provides the following benefits: Personal Growth: TLC helps individuals discover their strengths, values, and passions, fostering personal development. Empowerment: Coaches empower teens with the tools they need to take control of their lives and make informed decisions. Academic Success: Many teens struggle with school stress, and coaching can provide techniques for time management and effective study skills. Mental Health: Coaches work with teens to address issues like depression and anxiety, teaching them strategies to cope with life’s challenges. Social Skills: Developing strong interpersonal skills is crucial for young adults, and life coaches can assist in this area. Healthy Relationships: Coaching can assist teens to build and maintain healthy relationships, both with their peers and with adults. Life Skills: Essential life skills, such as time management, are taught to help young individuals thrive in various aspects of life. Coaching is based on the premise that every teen has inherent abilities enabling them to be successful in life. Coaching helps teens (and adults, if that’s their specialty) become more adept at making delicious lemonade out of life’s many lemons.  How TLC Sessions Work TLC sessions differ per coach. What’s most important though is that they use evidence-based strategies to help young people develop a sense of agency, plan for the future, and that they employ effective coaching practices that  guide teens to experience impactful change. Coaches will generally offer some form of introductory call with the parents and/or teen to discuss intentions, challenges, and desired outcomes. Some may even offer them for free.  If the coach and teen are a good fit, then they will proceed to an initial session during which the teen’s current situation and desired outcomes are discussed. This is then followed by regular coaching sessions, usually held weekly or bi-weekly.  During sessions, coaches listen, assess, then guide teens to meaningful revelations. The coach and teen then co-create actionable solutions to the teen’s problem.  The coach will work with your teen and equip them with crucial tools for not only coping with what happens in life, but flourishing through it. Coaches also emphasize accountability, ensuring consistent progress towards the established goals. These sessions offer guidance and support tailored to the teen’s individual needs.  including skill-building, and building resilience. Coaches also measure progress through self-reflection, feedback, and the achievement of set goals. They celebrate progress, set new goals for the future, and ensure that any pursuits of personal growth are feasible and sustainable. Coaching sessions usually end with a summary of key points, reminders of the week’s actionable tasks, and future planning.  TLC sessions with a certified life coach provide a structured and purposeful approach to empower young individuals, fostering self-discovery, goal achievement, and personal growth through regular conversations, guidance, and personalized support. 4. Empowering Teens with Life Skills A common misconception of TLCs is that we are a crutch, someone who takes care of what a teen wants and solves their problems for them. This just isn’t true. TLC emphasizes the importance of equipping young individuals with life skills which make them more independent. They guide teens to navigate life effectively, make positive choices, and reach their full potential. Some key life skills taught in TLC include time management, communication, problem-solving, emotional regulation, mindfulness, stress reduction, and decision-making. These issues may be addressed as early as the first session, and become an integral part of a teen’s personal and academic success.  By instilling these skills, coaches empower teens to become more self-reliant and capable of facing the challenges that arise. The goal is to help them develop a growth

10 Ways Parents Can Help Teens Become Better Learners

10 Ways Parents Can Help Teens Become Better Learners

Parenting a teenager can sometimes feel as complex as solving a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded, but you’re not alone in this challenge. This post, authored by an experienced academic and life coach to teens, is here to help you understand the teenage mind and guide you in supporting your teens to develop effective learning habits. We’ll explore 10 ways you can help boost your teen’s ability to improve academically while nurturing their confidence and resilience. Ways parents can help teens become better learners: 1) Encourage Honest, Frank Conversations Breaking the silence code is the first step. Foster open and candid conversations with your teens about their academic struggles. Create a safe and non-judgmental space where they can comfortably share their achievements and challenges. 2) Determine Their Current Motivation If your child’s school motivation relies on phrases like “Because you make me do it” or the vague “Because I want a job one day,” it’s time to help them discover their inner drive. Encourage them to unearth their passions and a sense of purpose beyond external expectations. Use targeted questions to ignite their motivation. Not sure where to start with this step? An experienced teen life coach can help. 3) Help Them Develop Internal Motivation Nurture your child’s intrinsic motivation by emphasizing the joy of learning and personal growth. Celebrate their efforts, resilience, and progress, highlighting that success is built on determination, not innate talent. Studies show that praising efforts over abilities fosters a growth mindset, motivating students to continuously improve. 4) Be Curious About Their Learning Demonstrate genuine interest in your teens’ schoolwork. Engage in meaningful post-school conversations, attentively listen to their insights, and ask questions to help both you and them understand the material better. Teaching someone else what they’ve learned is an effective learning technique. 5) Create Consistency and Enforce Clear Boundaries Establish a routine for schoolwork by setting clear expectations and boundaries. Involve your teen in creating these boundaries, determining the reasonable amount of time for schoolwork. This structure provides stability and helps them concentrate on their studies amid extracurricular activities. 6) Use an App Blocker Sometimes, enforcing boundaries can be challenging, but it pays off. Once your teen discovers the connection between less screen time and improved focus, they’ll appreciate it. Employ an app blocker during study times to reduce distractions and enhance comprehension, boosting their grades. 7) Embrace Diverse Learning Methods Redefine traditional learning methods and encourage your teens to explore diverse approaches. This can involve teaching what they’ve learned to others, using flashcards, or integrating their hobbies into their educational journey. For example, if your teen enjoys gaming, encourage them to explore coding and understand the math behind their favorite virtual worlds. If they love reading, suggest creating engaging stories to help memorize academic materials. 8) Provide a Well-Lit and Comfortable Study Space Ensure your teen has a dedicated, well-lit, and comfortable study area. A conducive environment enhances concentration and encourages effective learning. Keep it free from distractions and stocked with necessary supplies, promoting a productive study routine. This is one of the easiest (to employ and to overlook!) ways to help your child succeed. 9) Monitor and Encourage Healthy Sleep Habits Sleep is essential for effective learning and memory retention. Help your teens establish healthy sleep patterns by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and ensuring they get enough rest. Adequate sleep enhances cognitive functions and prepares them for successful learning. It can be tough to make sure your child gets enough sleep since so many factors may contribute to them staying up late. 10) Partner with Teachers and School Collaborate with your teen’s teachers and school to support their educational journey. Attend parent-teacher conferences, engage with educators, and stay informed about school events and activities. Building a strong partnership with the school reinforces the message that education is a shared endeavor. By being involved, you demonstrate your commitment to your teen’s success and help create a supportive learning community. Now, armed with these additional strategies, you’re well-equipped to guide your teens towards academic excellence, personal growth, and overall success. Remember that as a parent, your involvement and support play a crucial role in shaping your teen’s educational experience. Embrace the adventure of learning and make their schooling journey a memorable and rewarding one! Conclusion: Now that you’re armed with these savvy strategies, it’s time to employ them. If you need extra help with this, don’t forget to talk about your kids’ needs with a trusted professional so that they can help your kid flourish. An academic and teen life coach may even be more useful than a school counselor, as they can equip your teen with time management strategies, stress management techniques, developing healthy coping mechanisms and mindfulness, and with accountability. Remember, education is a journey. Let’s make your teen’s one worth celebrating!
